I Write Poetry

she opened her home to him
giving him a place to step out
of the storms that were raging
all around him

hers was a place of peace
a respite from the turmoil
his life had become
she didn't offer him pity
genuinely caring
she made him the offer

I accepted her offer
finally a ray of sunshine
in a forever cloudy
and foreboding sky

I had few possessions
some clothes of course
some personal items
anything and everything
that I held dear to me

having no luggage
I folded everything neatly
putting them in
two black extra strong Hefty bags
I knew they wouldn't break
didn't need my things
strewn on the street

I know when I showed up
rang her front door bell
I knew I made an impression
she never admitted to me

that when she opened her door
looking at my forlorn self
with black Hefty bags in tow
she silently cried her eyes out for me

but she wasn't going to show me
the tears in her eyes
instead she greeted me warmly
told me to put my things down

offered me a hot meal
for desert there'd be
my choice of tea
and some pie

humble beginnings I do admit
that was many years ago
and sometimes in my quiet time
when I just think to myself
it almost feels as if it were
just yesterday
