I Love Slam Poetry
Freedom of Speech
I gotta tell you something
I gotta say that yesterday may have been the last day
Of a life-long fight in my mind to find the right way
To Describe the inner workings of my soul and my mind
Why, just the other day, I wrote it
On a couple yellow sticky notes that
"I've got a heart full of songs
my hand cannot transcribe
a story of redemption
of one once lost now found"
"Oh, I've got so much to say
But I just don't have the words
'cause this soul of mine's an ocean
And I don't know how to swim"
You see, I've been trying to paint a picture for years
I've written symphonies, I've written some stories
See, I've been trying to tell my stories inside the confines
Of two rhymes in four lines, inside the chords in four four time
But this mind of mine has always colored outside the lines
No, my mind cannot be contained in the nice and neat formula that is Songwriting.
And Yeah, I'm a musician, yeah, I'm a writer
But that doesn't mean I'm a singer-songwriter
The thing is I've always had the words to say
But the words were always trimmed away
By the notion that emotion should be limited by syllables
Now that I'm free I can say everything
I've been trying to say since the day I stepped into the light of my new life.
So, my friends, If you've got a story to tell
And you can't squeeze it into your neat little chords and boxes
I would highly advise you to think outside the box
And stop stressing about how many times your jaw drops in a line
Write it out, just ride it out,
Let it go with the flow that you know you can't show otherwise
Cut it loose from the Noose, let it breathe
Let it read naturally the way your mind was designed to speak.
