A Lost Sunset

This past evening's sunset was so beautifully tragic that it left me drained and exhausted
I watched the autumn sun rays as they drifted out of sight which then made me think my hope was going as well
This far off world of sunrays in the western clouds seemed so unreachable but only those with wings could go
Even the birds knew something was up with all their sorrowful cries as it grew darker behind us
Those burnt skies have moved on west, leaving behind those who needed more time from the day
Violet hued thunderstorms inked their way in from the east, blending in with the twilight somber
Fierce lightning lashed out at the distant stars and to those who could not make the day
There was this urgency in me to try to catch up with this fading sunset but I knew that I will be left behind once again
Left behind only to deal with those ominous feelings of losing the warmth in my shirt and my hands
I was standing there alone with this coldness surrounding me as the night was looming in,
swallowing up everything that had warmth in it
My hair started to flow in the direction of the storm as if it was trying to pull me into it's void
Small house lights went out and the street lamps were blinking as the first rain drops hit the pavement
Bony trees were doing their cancerous dance with no leaves to offer to the night
Instead, like small children, the fallen leaves ran around aimlessly into the streets and around their mother trees who now didn't want them
I glanced again to the west as it was now looking like a fire was burning out in the sky
Embers of what was once the day were quickly turning to smoldering greyness followed up by oncoming lurking shadows of the malevolent night
Night spirits gathered to cast off doubt into the hearts of those who needed the day's rays of hope
Yes, that sky in the west had now gone and it had been taken over by angry marching clouds that dropped down sheets of despair that sliced through the night sky
I ran as fast as I could with the mindset of something being taken away from me and being left behind only to face the menacing night
Autumn rainstorms still had something furious to say about the summer's cherished hopes of the people
They did not let us forget that they still hide within the day's hearts and minds of the young and old
As heavy a burden as that may seem to be, the overwhelming night only went as far as the eye could see until this new day dawned
The spears of sunshine had come piercing though the eastern heavens, taking out the night
Wiping off the ashes of the dark skies and pushing back the beast of doubt once again
