A favourite romantic poem - Heidenröslein

Sah ein Knab' ein Röslein stehn,

Röslein auf der Heiden,

War so jung und morgenschön,

Lief er schnell es nah zu sehn,

Sah's mit vielen Freuden.

Röslein, Röslein, Röslein rot,

Röslein auf der Heiden.

Knabe sprach: "Ich breche dich,

Röslein auf der Heiden.”
Röslein sprach: "Ich steche dich,

Dass du ewig denkst an mich,

Und ich will's nicht leiden.
"
Röslein, Röslein, Röslein rot,
Röslein auf der Heiden.

Und der wilde Knabe brach
's
Röslein auf der Heiden;

Röslein wehrte sich und stach,

Half ihr doch kein Weh und Ach,

Musste es eben leiden.

Röslein, Röslein, Röslein rot,

Röslein auf der Heiden.

Johann Wolfgang Goethe

Saw a boy a rosebud light
Rosebud in the heather
Was so young and morning bright
Ran he quick to see the sight
Looked with joy together
Rosebud, rosebud, rosebud red
Rosebud in the heather

Boy he spoke, ‘I’m picking thee
Rosebud in the heather’
Rosebud spoke, ‘I’m pricking thee
So you’ll ever think on me
O Sorrow strike me never’
Rosebud, rosebud, rosebud red
Rosebud in the heather

And the wretched boy would pick
The rosebud in the heather
Though Rosebud took her thorn to prick
It helped her not her wounds to lick
Her pain would last forever
Rosebud, rosebud, rosebud red
Rosebud in the heather

Usually thought to refer to Goethe’s ‘plucking’ and discarding of Friederike Brion. She never really recovered from the loss. My translation.

Never liked this poem. A rape, put in beautiful words?

I found this one creepy for some reason.

Set to music by Schubert

@AbbeyP And indeed by Lehar in Friederike. I rather prefer the Lehar.
