I Am A Poet

something I've been writing for a few years
Roads 08/14-10/2/19
I know your roads
I've been on them all
I grew up on them
I've got stories for them all

With yellow and white lines
I rushed along you
in the Race against my death
You took me away

Oh road, take me far
Take me far away now
Everything's too heavy to bear here
let me start over new
Find new roads away from you
let me go, please let me be free

When I was alone
To you I would Run
With all windows down and Radio up
you carried me far, far away

Your gravel would heal my pain
When pavement opened my veins
please don't make me go home
Please just carry me away

You saw my rage in flashes of lightning
Heard me sing as the sun slowly climbed
Watched me fall in love in the blizzard
Won't you please, do this for me?
Won't you please take me away?

Oh, I know your roads
I know where they go
I've been on them all
I can't stay here, no

So I'm driving down 34 one more time
with all I could fit in the back of my ride
I'm not comin' back, Mom and Dad, I'll never be back
For these demons will remember my name

I hope I forget these roads
I hope someday I heal
Most of all, I hope one day
I'll be more than my father's son.

3/28/18
It's been a long, long, long three years
Since I've left that place
The memories are blurry now
I can't quite recall your face

Now I sing a song
of a life remade
Now the storm is passed
the fires of hell have waned

I knew your roads
I'm far, far away now
Thank you, Thank you Lord
Now I'm free to be me.

10/02/19
I escaped
I ran far away
I thought I could outrun you
I thought I would forget you

But your roads were scarred into my heart,
I passed them on to the ones that I loved.
With my soul I loved them,
With my fists I hated them,
Now they’ve all gone to blaze their own trails.

My sin has caught up with me,
My own blood has stained my hands.
My God, take me away from these roads
Let me never lay eyes on them again.

I know this road
I've been here all my life.
Is path is all too well trodden
To make another way?

You saw my rage in shattering glass
Heard me scream as the moon slowly climbed.
Watched me break them the way I was broken,
My God, won't you take me away?
My God, take me far, far away

@GeistInTheMachine Thank you. I have many deep writings of this sort interspersed throughout my page.

@SW-User You're a good writer - it shows.

Do you make a living off writing by any chance?
SW-User
@GeistInTheMachine Negative, I do not.
I earn my money at a desk as a security officer... currently gunning for A shift supervisor for swing shift at a building in downtown Denver, though.

Things are looking up.

@SW-User Ah. I work in medical billing, but I'm looking for a change.
