Hurdles

Hurdles are made for us to jump.
Or there we'd sit in sad slump.
As the hurdle forms, great wall.
Every minute growing ever tall.
Solid and stout without a door.
Walls getting thicker even more.
Slowly enough a roof will form.
Obscuring our view of the norm.
Trapped inside the room I made.
Never leaving I’m afraid.
Walls quickly starting to close.
Gone are the colours I freely chose.
Darkened walls quickly move in.
Roof forming a low ceiling.
There I sit in my box so small.
In my world, no choice at all.
Walls sealed keeping out fear.
Weeping quietly for many a year
Getting cramped but smiling out.
Never giving the "help me" shout.
Fingers aching needing to move.
Permission needed mind approve.
Finger touches darken wall.
Flaking paint and plaster fall.
Small hole made to the bright.
Wiggle finger towards the light.
Just a glimpse of a new view.
Just enough to see what's true.
Walls relax the space feels fine.
To the colour, I chose to be mine.
Brighter room is not so small.
Ceiling rising to suit the tall.
Finger pulls small window out.
Light floods in to a happy shout.
World looks great from the room.
No great fear or big bad doom.
Roof lifting really high.
Pushing past the clouds in the sky.
Wall falls back to hurdles once more.
Solidly built with no safety door.
But over them I can clearly see.
The way I really want to be.
"Running away" the hurdle screams.
"Life isn’t all that it seems".
I make to escape but turn away.
Towards the hurdle, I run today.
Gathering speed with all my might.
Chasing the hurdle, holding my fright.
It moves around and plays big games.
Calling me by stupid names.
Given time there is no place to hide.
The hurdle at standstill now my guide.
The hurdle is quiet nowhere to go.
Friends smooth path so I don't slow.
I look back at hurdle I cleared.
Slightly damaged and tear smeared.
Never knowing exactly when.
I cleared the stupid hurdle pen.
Landing safely with a big smile.
I notice more hurdles in every mile.
Now confidence built to a great high.
Each one taken with leap through sky.
Hurdles made I now can jump.
I’ll jump them all and not just slump.
