"Rude Awakening; The Naked Guy"

Ok, of all the things I could imagine coming across in the desert, on my way to or from work, I Never- In my wildest dreams expected this. I mean, I've been waiting for a close encounter with a UFO, or finding a stash of money or drugs from the Cartels, or a dead body, or a serial killer caught in the act, or even a couple caught doing the nasty...but this? Not in a bazillion years.

I was enjoying my cool drive in this morning through the desert, 65 degrees, cup of coffee and a smoke, when I arrived at the gate...there was a guy standing there, outside, Butt-Ass Naked. OMFG! I said, "Dude what the fuck?" He told me he'd been carjacked, robbed, and stripped of his clothes and driven out in the middle of nowhere in the desert and he'd been walking for miles. I was dumfounded. And of course, trusting , nieve me... I told him to hop in my jeep and I'll get him some clothes, and get him some water, and call 911 right?

Well, first of all, I screwed up major. I should have never brought him through the gate onto the site. This is a multil-billion dollar Power Plant, and we were running, so there was the security factor ignored. But hey, I couldn't have just left him out there with no clothes right? I drove him in and parked the jeep and told him to sit tight. I went inside, grabbed an old pair of coveralls and my Senior Operator was freaking out! "Dude, WTF? You don't know if he's an escaped prisioner from the prison that's about 30 miles away or what!" Yeah, ok, so I'm way too trusting, especially since I left my keys in the jeep with my $5,000 camera in it to boot.

But, as it turned out, he was still there, waiting, cold, hungry, thirsty, and appeared drunk or on something or just injured, hell I don't know, but I drove him back off site and gave him some clothes and watched as he put on the coveralls inside-out" Then I took off my socks for his feet. Ok, this guy is definitely out of it. But hey, I take home stray dogs, and what if it had been a naked woman? Would she still be standing there outside the gate naked? I think not. I hold no double standards. And what if he needed medical attention?

So, the Sherrif was called, which took about 45 minutes. Then they pulled up and got his story on report, then a second squad car shows up about 30 minutes later and finally, they leave, I figured if the guy was lying, or wanted by the law or border patrol, he would not have stuck around waiting for the sherrif once he got some clothes. So, did I do the right thing? No, I screwed up, but my buddies will overlook that and cover my ass since nothing happened, but I did do the right thing by showing care, concern and compassion.

I hope the guy was telling the truth and not some dude who got wasted last night and rolled his vehicle and was just trying to cover his ass (well, uncover his ass;) by avoiding a DWI. I believed him, and I'm glad I got him some clothes to cover his body and give him his dignity back. I mean, if it were me, I'd hope somebody would do the same and not just call the cops. But in this, I learned a few lessons; 1) check your surroundings- something I did not do. 2) Never, I mean Never bring some strange person through that gate, 3) Always keep some extra clothes, along with some water. 4) Never loose my compassion for my fellow man. I am who I am, and I cannot loose that part of me, that big heart, that trusting soul, that faith in humanity.

I have a gift, or a curse, depending on how you look at it; for empathy and compassion. It may be my undoing one day, or it may be my blessing. I'd love to here your thoughts on this, please feel free to comment. It sure made for an intresting start to my day today, I hadn't plannd on writing, for I have 300+ comments, posts and stories/poems to read and catch up on...looks like this true story is one for the books and definitely a story for this series, "Shooting from the Hip," writing without editing, or forthought. Just me, telling another story that My wife and friends will never believe.

I can hear her now... " Shit only happens to you Kelly. Only to you! ;)

I guess I should not tell her about my close encounter with the UFO yesterday morning? (sigh)
