Why I started speaking in favor of women's rights.
Well, before lost to the sands of time and my faltering memory perhaps it's time to finally share the origin story of why Silent assent to feminist goals became vocal agreement and I picked my pen up so many times to say I supported the movement.
She had a name. Let the record reflect that much Eternally.
Caralee Silver Casale.
You see, She was gone, Far too soon as they say.
seems like sometimes it's the best of us that die so young only 20 years old when we lost her.
All too often men kill women but this story was not one in which a man
buried her in the ground.
Cara was my Single biggest crush while I was down in Florida.
I adored her. She was one of my favorite people.
my memories are filled with things we did because I knew how hyper active
she was so I used it to bond with her.
I remember seeing her jumping off Balconies with friends.
so I took her screaming at the neighbors like a bunch of mad hooligans just
to laugh at people's bewildered faces because I knew who I was chilling with
VERY well and I wanted to be so much closer to her.
I get that she just wanted to be friends but I've never come
so close to loving someone i've known face to face.
so when she died the wheels basically fell off the bus and the bottom fell out.
In those hours of darkness my mind as I went through all the stages of grief was haunted
by friends who had been too sexually forward with her
while I could do little to protect her.
I should have cut them off sooner I should have done a lot of things.
but I didn't fully understand her yet.
She didn't love herself, she didn't see how amazing she was.
She didn't know she deserved better than all of this than she was getting.
and so when Desiree's older brother intervened to forbid them from hanging out with her
she became fast friends With a mutual of ours.
Jennifer. Who stole from her, was caught red handed
and did Cara stand up for herself? no. she didn't know she deserved better.
after all the community had said she was a bad influence for
merely smoking pot. I mean if she was a bad influence she was Not that much of a bad girl.
She was still mostly good. she just liked to get high.
I didn't realize it then but she was insecure and didn't like herself
so when Jennifer offered her that ride on that tragic night
she drove like a lead footed mad woman, blew through the guard rails
destroying them and into a lake where Cara Drown
as the Paramedics failed to get to her in time but pulled Jennifer out.
It still pisses me off to this day the District Attorney didn't bring Jennifer up on Charges of Reckless or negligent homicide because with the guard rails blown past it would have been open and shut.
and I say this as one of Jennifer's former friends who just can't forgive her because she got
one of my biggest fucking crushes killed.
But Cara's Self loathing reminded me of a Quote by Caroline Caldwell
“In a society that profits from your self doubt, liking yourself is a rebellious act.” - Caroline Caldwell.A
and that's why we need Feminism. To Honor the dead.
faced with such grief, with questions of whether cutting friends who abused her off would have reminded her that she was WORTHY if there was ANYTHING we could have done to shake her out of the mean things she had internalized about herself and slay the Demons in her head for her so she would say NO to that car ride I wish we still could. I wish We could do ANYTHING to bring her back and I'm mad at Desiree's older brother and every aspect of Orlando that told her she was a bad influence and a bad girl.
I had to do spring cleaning after that of friendships. Simon who stuck his hand down her pants, axed. Jon who was using Opioids to control a woman who wasn't her, Axed.
Jennifer who was driving the Car that night. Axed.
I haven't spoken to any of them since that Blackened horrible night.
But speaking out made me a lot of Women friends. and that's what I need. in my Sorrow.
Cara's death had been the Catalyst that turned my Silent agreement with Feminism into Vocal activism.
and so that is the real origin story.
