Keep Hope Alive
Leslé Honoré Poetry
There are some who
Don’t blaze trails
They birth highways
They link hope and dreams
To destinations
Where there was once only
Barriers
They carve
paths
purpose
A people
Through darkness into light
Once in a generation
There are giants born in the slums
That are not born in them
Not born in us
Once in a generation
Do we witness the witness
Build a bridge
Run for congress
Run for president
Leaving a legacy in their wake
That doesn’t invite
But inspires and Demands
That we travel the road
Laid with bricks made by bravery
Held together by the mortar of
Tears
Grit
Love
Once in a generation
Do our living feet
Walk on the holy ground
That calls on us to follow
Lay our work next to theirs
Lay our dreams
On top of theirs
Stand tall and smell freedoms air
While feet firmly planted
On the shoulders of a servant
A leader
A giant
We live
We work
We learn
We dream
We hope
Because he did
Because he shouted life
Into dry bones
Because his life
Wove into our souls
Into the souls yet to come
A fire that hatred can not kill
Our children
Their children
And their children’s children
Will know
That they are
SOMEBODY
Deserving of dignity
Opportunity
Community
Safety
Power
We soar in skies of possibilities
Because once in a generation
A giant was born
Walked amongst us
Held us together
Help us up
Held us accountable
Held us in God’s love
Rest now
You fierce and powerful
Servant
The sons and daughters
Born of your blood
And your work
Will forever
keep HOPE alive
Thank you Reverend Jesse L. Jackson Sr.
