رأيتُ الهلالَ ووجهَ الحبيب

فكانا هلالَينِ عند النَّظرْ

فلم أدرِ من حيرتي فيهما

هلالَ الدجى مِن هلال البشرْ

ولولا التورُّدُ في الوجنتين

وما راعني من سواد الشَّعَرْ

لكُنتُ أظن الهلالَ الحبيبَ

وكنتُ أظن الحبيب القمرْ


Translation:

“ I saw the crescent moon and the face of the beloved

They were two crescents when I looked

So I did not know, in my confusion over them,

Whose the crescent of night was from the human crescent

And if it was not for the rosy blush on her cheeks
And the blackness of her hair

I would have thought the crescent moon was the beloved

And that the beloved was the moon”
