My grandfather lived in a tiny village that was practically a ghost town, it was a bustling little farm town till after WWII, the railroad was no longer needed to transport grains & other crops & farm supplies and when it closed because people could buy tires & gasoline then people starting moving away. Most of the houses stood empty, there was an old bank that looked like something out of Bonanza but it hadn’t been used since the late 40’s, a General Store that also looked like it was built in the 1800’s, had a pot-bellied stove, wood floors, an old-time cash-register etc., and a blacksmith shop that had been bought by someone to use to repair tractors and other farm equipment. We loved to explore the empty homes, none of them locked, one old Victorian house included, and we found the old school that had been closed since about 1948 too.

@HopalongMJ we used to go on long walks along farm roads in Missouri and find abandoned houses, little old frame homes, there wouldn’t be much inside but it was interesting to see how they were made, oilcloth wallpaper on the walls, roll-up shades on the windows, and in several a calendars hanging on the walls with the year they moved out. Sometimes there’d be flowers still growing like irises around the abandoned houses.

@cherokeepatti Some of those old houses have held up. They knew how to build then. I like old barns, too.
