Why do some people still believe that objects with masses that differ will fall at different rates?

Of acceleration, that is. This was demonstrated to be false by Galileo centuries ago. It may be "intuitive", but like so much else that is intuitive, it's wrong.

Because they confuse "mass" with "weight" . Here is a simple answer of air resistance which a lighter object like the feather of a bird face because of which it reaches ground slowly.
@DanielsASJ Yes, they do confuse the two, but even so...
