It may not always be an attack, but sometimes it is. You can tell by what you encounter, or if you feel like your breath is being taken away.

There used to be a time when I had sleep paralysis almost every night when I was a teenager. I would go without sleep sometimes. This was back when I used to live in a cursed house. Turns out it had animal bones underneath it. We found this out when we were digging out a tree root that was growing from under the foundation of the house.
