I Had a Child With Down Syndrome

My special child was born almost 22 years ago. Special because he has Down syndrome. That day was big and strange since I received a double gift: André, my special child and his twin brother, Gerardo. Gerardo is perfectly normal, a bit zonzo, but normal.

You are never prepared to receive news like this: Your child has Down syndrome.
When the doctor who treated my wife call me to tell me the news, he took her precautions. I suppose that he had previously given that kind of news and parents take it as something very serious. After calling a nurse, he very seriously told me:
His wife gave birth to two children, but one of them has Down syndrome.
"And how are they in health?" - I asked, after a pause while pondering the news they had just given me.
"They're fine, but one of them has Down syndrome," the doctor insists.
-But they are in good Health? I say: they do not have any problem?
The doctor slightly desperate one tells me. "I don't tell you that one of them has Down syndrome?" Don't know what Down Syndrome is?
Yes, I know what Down Syndrome is. - Of course I knew! In my country they are called "Mongolites." Many people make fun of them in the street. This is my land; This is the Mexican culture. I was one of the mockers. I was also mock Mongolites. I also told Mongolite jokes. Me too ... this day life gave me a lesson.
But from that moment everything was different. It was my boy! My special child. There was only one way left: love it!
I used to think that something bad had done; that God had punished me by giving me a child with Syndrome. How silly he was!
I don't think so anymore. Today I understand that God made me someone special by giving me a special child.
People woth downs sundrome are some of the most lovely kind-hearted people you'll ever meet.

If more people were as nice as they are, this world would be a better place.
