He was the token artisan of the group. They mostly just kept him around as comedy relief.
He was in the trunk because they tossed him into the river as a cruel joke. Then they told him they didn't want him to get the interior of the car wet so if he wanted a ride home he had to ride in the trunk.

@bookerdana a little-known fact. DaVinci was a well known bare knuckled brawler in all of the pubs around town.
The so-called Smart guys mostly kept DaVinci around because he was good looking and the women loved him. :-)
But they never appreciated him for his great mind.

@bookerdana I guess he did think that staring off into the sky and pondering the existence of self and ones relationship with reality as a whole was something that mentally challenged people did. He was much more into the more physical aspects of his surroundings.
