Can sleeping on an old, lumpy mattress cause back pain?

I have not gotten a new mattress in years. My apartment is on the third floor of a house and Ive been dreading getting a new mattress up all those steps. But lately ive been waking up in the morning with back pain. I guess it's time

I need one because my body aches in the morning. The mattress has become too soft. The pandemic stopped me from buying a new one because I need to try it out in the store, and as I don’t go into stores, and I’d have to drive to another city to find a mattress store, I’ve put up with it, but my back and hips are suffering because of it.

@Carissimi The new latex foam mattresses are amazing, well worth the time to find the one right for you.
This may sound stupid - but I know it works: put an old chipwood door underneath the mattress in the meantime.

I don’t have a spare door, and couldn’t lift it if I had one. @CharlesRomsey

For sure could be the cause of the back pain, or adding to it at least

Some mattress places deliver and will remove the old one

Yes it definitely can. You spend an estimate of 30% of your life in bed sleeping so you should have a good one.
