trout lilies.

long story for these, I suppose. originally I was going to ask on sw about a flower that looks pretty much like a daffodil without a trumpet, but according to the person I met out in the park, these are 'trout lilies'. named so for their vaguely fishy leaf appearance. I don't think I've ever seen them before, but also according to the same person they only flower when they've managed to store up enough energy to produce two leaves; then they'll flower, otherwise they just exist as a regular, non-flowering plant. this year, for some reason, there are a ton. whole areas are just blanketed with them. (all I saw were yellow, it seems the can also be red). and now I kinda wanna go into the park and steal a bunch of them to stick all over in the yard.

I mulled the name over as I looked at the picture and got it! The leaves being the 'trout' part- easy to remember now.
