Michael Collins wrote something about that. When he was alone in the command module and it was passing on the far side of the moon, he was conscious of the fact that he was the person who was most distant from the Earth. On his left was the moon, on the other side of which were his two fellow astronauts and beyond them, everyone he knew on Earth. But on his right was....who knows what? (as he put it.)
