This is a Hickory Horned Devil caterpillar (Citheronia regalis)


Despite it's fierce look, this species is actually quite harmless. It's an evolutionary bluff, if you will, to ward off predators, so it can keep on leaf munching another day, which it needs to do to in order to metabolize the pupal phase, which turns it into this, the regal moth.
