There isn’t a category for gardening - anyone know a less ball-breaking way of getting moss out of a lawn other than raking it?

Moss like moist and acid. If you have too much shade they will grow beautifully. The pH of your soil can be changed by adding an alkaline poweder to that area. I am sure your local garden center has those.

Alternatively, If you have a BBQ grill at home with coal or a fireplace with real wood, you can use your cold ashes on your moss. Ashes are also alkaline.

Otherwise I suggest adding some big stones to the area. If you rub yoghurt on your stones, the moss will grow on them and you will have a beautiful green garden without mowing a lawn. It is a painfree way to go green. Think Japan and there are lots of inspirational pictures on Pinterest.

Iron Sulphate to kill it.
You can add lime to to the soil and that will help neutralize the acid.
But they're not long term solutions.

Dish soap ?
2 oz. of dish soap to a gallon of water.
Spray onto moss and leave for a day or two.
Moss should turn brown and start to die off.
Rake up and the grass should start to grow.

employ someone else to do it

Hard work pays off lol. I raked it really well about a month ago and left it, it looks really green now. Otherwise you'll have to hire a professional. I tried those mosskillers but found it only killed it for a little while

I say keep the moss

But moss is soft and harmless.
