Is The Ocean a Living Thing?

I know there are many living creatures, living IN the ocean. It has it own ecosystem, etc. But the ocean itself, do you ever wonder that it might be a living singularity? I mean doesn't it seem to have its own characteristics? Have you ever visited the beach and brought a bottle of seawater home? After a few hours it starts to smell, like taking it away from sea it starts to die.

I can understand completely. I've actually seen a documentary in the past that investigates whether water IS life...or a life form...Can't recall the name right now. If you think about it, life as we know it cannot exist without water...so maybe it is living or life itself. Who can prove it's not so?
