I think they understand our emotions, more than anything. They may not understand all of our words, but they seem to interpret our vocal inflections very well, and they can also read our facial expressions. And I've heard that they can even smell certain emotions, like fear and sadness. And they interpret body language very well too.

And sometimes they know what we're about to do before we even begin to do it. Our last dog always knew when she was about to get her teeth brushed, and she hated it, so she always went and hid underneath the couch. Maybe she could smell the toothpaste when the cap was taken off the tube. But sometimes she went and hid even before the cap was taken off. ESP maybe?
