Imagine a bunch of dogs are living by the ocean. One dog is born with webbed feet. He swims the best and can bring more food, so he has a big family. That webbed feet gene shows up more down the line, and very time a dog has webbed feet, they do super well. During very hard years, the weaker dogs die, but the dogs who have webbed feet always live.
Over a very, very long time, all the dogs will eventually have webbed feet.
It's just accidents that work out for the best over millions of years.
