Tips for taking care of tarantula?

My father takes terrible care of his rose hair tarantula, so I'm taking custody of the spider. My main question is how do I feed it? There's crickets in the cage but I've been reading that you shouldn't have uneaten crickets in the cage after a certain amount of time? Should I have the crickets in a separate cage and throw some in every week or so for the spider to eat??
