I started college in fall of 2016 and I moved out of my parents house, but I'm only about 25 minutes away. While there, my aunt noticed that she had two abandoned kittens living under her house. My aunt didn't have the time to take care of them and my mom wouldn't let her take them to and animal shelter, so we took them in. I don't go back home much due to school, I only ever go back for breaks and occasional weekends. Despite this, I was able to develop quite a bond with those cats. My mom insists that they are my cats, yet she refuses to let me bring them with me when I move into my apartment. But she still refuses to claim them as her own. I still have 3 more years of school and I'll be living in that apartment until I graduate. I feel that after 3 years of barely seeing those cats, they truly won't be mine anymore, so I wouldn't want them then. For me its now or never. My mom doesn't agree with me.
Am I just being petty about this? Or am I really justified in not taking in the cats after 3 years of being apart?

you're not being petty. your mom is just making things complicated.

your mom won't let them go to a shelter, your mom won't let them go with you... they are your mom's cats, no matter what she says or how you feel.

sorry. get yourself a new kitten for your apt.

@SW-User I agree that she's making things complicated. I really do want to get myself my own cat, but I'm pretty sure she'd be pissed XD

@melpug oh well... you're grown and living on your own now. she'll live.

@SW-User lol so true!
I'd fight to the death over my cats

@CallmeHopelessNotRomantic I would, but my mom is a real stickler
@melpug I had the same thing happen with a puppy.
An apartment is not a suitable home for a cat. If your mother's home has a graden, then that is where they should be.

@EllaDisenchanted An apartment is not a suitable place.'Just fine' is only your perception. Your cats would be happier in a more natural environment. Goldfish can live in a bowl!
@Butterflykisses24 Insulting me has no effect, whatsoever. There are more favourable sites for you.

Bottom line is you are not in a position to properly care for any pets for the next three years. One last time, tell your Mom they are not yours, school has priority, and she can do with the cats what she wishes. Then walk away.

get your own cat when you move into your apartment
melpug · 22-25, F
@Butterflykisses24 That's what I want to do, but I am so conflicted about it.
Butterflykisses24 · 51-55, F
@melpug don't be.Your mom claimed those cats.
melpug · 22-25, F
@Butterflykisses24 I completely agree with you, but she says that if they are "her" cats, she will just give them away. I'm not sure if shes bluffing or not...
