I'm single, live alone and have a cat but don't 'own' him.
He's feral, won't let anyone, including me, get within 10 feet but comes to my door every night. I'll drop down some food and he lets me pet him while he's eating. Weird. I get my minute of live animal contact, he gets a long healthy life...win-win.
