Interesting idea a friend told me about.
A friend of hers had said, "When I die, bring my dog to the wake, so he can see that I'm dead rather than have him think I abandoned him."

Yes. I agree. They will understand. I saw this in one of my own dogs when we lost our other dog. She was there when he died and she was very upset as it went along, until he actually died.
Then she sniffed him over and seemed to get over it. She's remembers my dead dogs name and will sometimes look expectedly at my wife or I if we mention him.
