Why does my dog make a howling noise?

When they are little I find it cute and adorable but big dogs they just trying too make me feel miserable. Why cant they just bark like regular dogs. Sometimes when I hear dogs howl at night, it makes me think that they are calling their ancestors to gather a dog meeting and take over the world.
