I'm glad we don't usually cook for dogs
Heartbreaking to spend hours dicing and chopping and simmering to see the masterpiece gobbled in 10 seconds flat.

"Usually" - I guess you're right about that given the size of the pet food industries all over the Western world.
But I recently discovered that it's much healthier for dogs and cats if their meals are prepared at home.
Free range, fully grass fed meat is better because it contains omega 3. Intensively farmed meat raised indoors on industrially prepared feed has no omega 3 at all.
For dogs, it's 20-50% full fat raw meat mixed with wholemeal cooked rice, carrots, celery and parsley, plus lots of raw bones, and maybe one egg per week. Dogs on this diet have good breath and don't stink.
For cats, it's 98% full fat meat with added taurine, heart, liver, brains, egg, hemp seed oil (omega 3), plus 1% ground & cooked fresh parsley/greens. Sometimes oily fish. For the sake of dental health only a small proportion should be minced or paste, enough to hold the additives and make them palatable. Most of the meat should be whole, not chopped, so the cat has to chew properly. Cats should also be introduced to bones a month or so after weaning so they get used to them, and should be given them while hungry.
Yes it's a hassle, but if we really love our pets we choose the expense and effort. We want the best for their long term health.
