I Am Interested In Dogs And Dog Training
Cesar Millan says "You don't get the dog you want, you get the dog you need". I hadn't yet heard that when I went to the shelter to find a fur baby. As it was I didn't know how I was going to be able to decide on which dog. I have always been drawn to very large dogs like my previous one.
I had the idea in my head that I would take a walk through and then go back and visit with the big ones. It would be a way to narrow down the choices. That went out the window as about 3/4 of the way down the corridor I spotted a sweet girl sitting pretty wagging her tail. I said "Look at you" as I crouched down to get better acquainted with her. She captured my heart and I knew she was the one. While much smaller than the dogs I am used to, I knew I would be taking her home. I put my fingers through the chain link while telling her that I was busting her out of here and from now on I would be taking care of her and she wouldn't have to worry again. Just then her handlers were on the other side of the kennel so she gave me a kiss on my fingers and went to the other side to say good morning to her handlers. I went back to the front desk and told the girl I had made my decision. I was then escorted to the visitation area while someone went and fetched her. The area was all concrete with benches. Being released from her kennel was wonderful for her she ran and ran. Didn't matter she was busy running we would have plenty of opportunity later to play. As this thought ran through my mind another of her handlers came by to say "I wondered where you went". She proceeded to tell me that she was surprised she wasn't in her kennel as no one seemed interested in her. I responded with "I'm taking her home to a fenced in yard".
Upon check out and payment I was given info on her. She had been there much longer than she was supposed to be. She was just too sweet to be put down and she really deserved a home. Especially since she had been picked up with her sister. The pair had been beaten pretty bad. The sister succumbed to her injuries but this one was a fighter and made it. As a child abuse survivor I knew we were kindred spirits.
The ride home was wonderful, she was so happy, we both were. Turns out she was very full of energy and it was a good thing I had a large fenced in back yard. We spent lots of time out there running around as she needed it. Afterwards she was so anxious to please as training was in order. She was a quick learner but the high energy lasted about 1 1/2 years. After that she calmed down and seems especially grateful that I helped her through it. Life has thrown me many curve balls since and she has stayed faithfully by my side. Sometimes clown, sometimes cuddle bug and always sweet. I got the dog that I needed!
