DIY Feral Cat Outdoor Shelters for winter

I recently had some cameras installed at my front and back entrances and have noticed that there are two stray cats that run across my front doorstep almost every night between 1 AM and 5 AM. I’ve asked my neighbours about them and nobody has seen them.

The temperatures are dropping and it’s getting really cold out there at night now so I am building two feral cat shelters to put along the front of my house where they roam.

If you have feral cats near your house, maybe you could build a shelter for them? This video is one i got from my local spca but there are lots of different ideas online

we had feral cats and kittens at my work. we built a cathouse outside and stuck a heater in it (even though it doesn't get super cold here, but sometimes it can). there was also an entrance where they could enter the warehouse and eat and sleep in one of the offices when we weren't there.
one time a mother abandoned her litter and we found them in the bushes. one sadly died but we were able to find homes for the other 3

That's great of you! I wonder if there is anyway to chemically sterilize them. Poor creatures, I'm happy there is a nice person like you who cares near them.

@Jenny1234 And if you can't keep them, give them to someone else. You wouldn't believe all the owner surrenders I've got over 20 years of dog rescue. Some people because they got a new carpet, or they had a child, it's sick. Well at least they gave the dogs to a rescue.

@JimboSaturn new carpeting so selfish. I mean, even if you have a child it’s really beneficial for kids to grow up with animals. That to me is no reason to give up a pet.

And yes, you’re right to give it to someone who is reliable and responsible and loves animals
@JimboSaturn we have a few vets here who do TNR for a low fee. one does it once a month for $15 but it takes forever to get an appointment assuming you can trap the cat on that day
have a shed that's heated for my guys. put food out everyday and do use TNR to control the population

@Jenny1234 TNR is a program of Trap, Neuter and Release. It works to try to keep the cat population lower out in the "wild." The cats are caught - humanely - and then "fixed' and let go.
My husband made one of these for the cats at work.
