I've never gone through that specifically, but the last dogs I had, died when my house burned down almost a decade ago. I ran in to save them but I couldn't. I puked from smoke inhalation & could've died but the firemen pulled me out before I passed out or anything.
I've always felt guilty that I couldn't save them. I haven't got another dog ever since & idk if I will someday but it'd be hard. All I can say is it isn't your fault. Never blame yourself. He's in doggy heaven loving you forever & thanking you for being strong enough. It's not easy to let go. You did a very hard thing
