Hard to know when it's time.

Ole is over 17 years old. Pretty good for a shihtzu but he's deaf. His right rear leg has become very lame. And he is nearly blind with constant need of eye medications. He eats ok and wags his tail when he urinates outside. He usually lets me know when he has to go out. Gave him |gabapentin| at 7 pm last night after he ate so he slept until 2 AM Drank water, went out 3 times, had a dog biscuit.
Drank more. Put my soft towel over him.on the bed and he's calmed down a bit but moans occasionally. Waiting for the meds to kick in.
Will treat the eyes again at 6:00 AM.
I kind of think it's time to put him down. I think he's ready. I don't want him to be in pain like this.
I can't sleep either.

GF is out of town at her cabin getting a new refrigerator fixed. Technically Ole is her dog but he prefers to stay with me and she's always in the go. She'll be back tomorrow.

3:50 and he's sleeping. Will try to sleep too.

Up at 4:15. Outside. Fed him chicken. More water. Laying in my arms in the chair sleeping fitfully.

Outside at 4:50. Wagged his tail. Back in. Drank. Back in bed.

Was outside again at 6:00. Interesting going out and seeing the moon in stop action every hour going overhead. Like a wallce and grommet movie.

To me it definitely seems like the right time, bless him. He's a grand age. You obviously care for him a great deal. It's ultimately all about quality of life. That's how I've always judged it with mine. I would give your gf the opportunity to say goodbye if she wants to, then do the necessary to ease the little chap over the rainbow bridge. All we can do is this one last caring thing for them. Hold fast to the memories. Take care ❤

Yeah once you can’t spell the meds you’re giving your dog it’s time to put them down (gabapentin)

@SW-User Ha! Never saw how it's actually spelled before. Label on the bottle is impossible to read.

Im so sorry. When ive had the pleasure of seeing my animals into old age, ive been in this same place. It's so hard.
They spend their lives pleasing us. I choose the time when he or she is doing that through their pain. Beyond that i feel, it' becomes about me.

What a beautiful pupper Tastyfrzz...
And what a long wonderful life you've given her😥

I am so sorry this is happening to your pup. It’s so hard to let them go but we know when it’s time when they tell us. Gently love him until you have to let him go. ❤

He looks well loved. He's got a great person to help him go peacefully.

Wow. Kudos to you for taking such good care of him. Total respect.
Sorry you have to make such a hard decision. He's really beautiful.
I think you both need to make that determination.
