I think it probably depends on the kind of pet. Our cats were family. The goldfish I had as a young child was not.

@Punches Curiously the cat we had at the time never seemed to be interested. The fish died of unknown causes after some years. I almost wrote seven years but that must be wrong because I must have been seven when I got the fish from a fair and we had moved house twice by the time I was 14 and I'm sure I didn't have an aquarium after the second move, and fairly sure that I didn't have one after the first move, strange how memory plays tricks after nearly sixty years.

@Punches Over fifty years ago? It seems unlikely. It's more likely that I overfed it, underfed it, didn't clean its tank properly or often enough, or something similar.
