All the best advice says not to growl at your dog when they guard their toys

Today I decided to challenge Bruno.
Sometimes he will take his bone and keep playing with it when I'm trying to put his coat on. When I say to drop it and try to take it he can get snappy and growl.
So after reading this nonsense advice, I've decided that I need to assert my alpha behaviour.
That is starting with curbing his decision to ignore my and snap back.

He took up his bone, so I chased him round then when he settled he turned his back to me to hide the toy so I kept going round in an attempt to take it he then did growl at me then at one point he looked like he might bite me. So I told him no!
And walked away. He dropped the toy and went to the door.
I picked the toy up and put the dry end in my mouth when he attempted to take it from me, I started with the growling and snapped.
The shock on his face made him sit and wait.
After 30 seconds I gave it to him, I then attempted to take it back. No growling. I then returned it to him and let him know he was a good boy.

He's started testing me again, I think because there's been a few changes recently.

He has caught my hand a few times with his teeth unintentionally so I know what to expect. I personally wouldn't recommend anyone else to do this, but I think I'm learning more about who he is.
And although he can be cheeky I don't think he wants to hurt me.
The last time he licked my cut I didn't even know it was bleeding and placed his head on my lap.

He just loves his things.
