I lost my dog today

I've had my dog for about 12 years since he was 6 weeks old. He was an old man but very active and energetic. I just fed him and was talking to him. I just had took his harness off and he hadn't been wearing his collar lately also.
I was getting ready to go somewhere and I told my husband to pay attention to what the dog was doing since I'd be leaving. He told me that he couldn't find the dog.
So thats it. I never saw him leave. I don't know exactly when or how he dissapeared but I have a strong feeling that someone picked him up.
Our townhouse is all locked up so it had to be either when I took the trash or when I went for the mail.
I never saw him. I had 1 earbud in so I wasn't focused when I opened the back door.
I'm so sad.

To all I got my dog 🐕 back after 6 hours. I prayed that somehow I would be reconnected with him but I must admit that I was doubtful since I live in a busy non residential area that has a busy fleamarket one block away.
I drove around for a couple hours afraid to see his body on the road.
I posted signs. Then a neighbor in the back of my little gated community called after seeing my poster. She had found him darting in between cars (when I didn't know he was missing yet)and she worked hard to catch him.
He stayed all day with her and her 2 dogs. She gave him food.
