Just don't use Open source if you care about patients.
I am a fan of gnu linux and stuff but still I don't recommend it.

How does open source interfere with patients?
I ended up giving up on calc and excel. We tried the ANOVA with excel too and couldn't get it. I ended up using R. It would have saved me so much time if I just started there! We used MATLAB in one of my classes and it was pretty fun. 🙂

I enjoy spending time figuring out linux issues if you do as well then good for you.
