I disagree about space exploration though I agree with you statement of our troubles. We have enough to fund both. It has to do with will not resources.
That said the human race is doomed if we dont spread out into the stars. There will come a day when the earth will become uninhabitable as it did for the dinosaurs. We will need to be able to escape it's confines.
If you can persuade the wealthy to acknowledge that the people who do their work are actually valuable you will go a long way to fixing the current troubles of which you are expressing concern. But we also have to prepare now for the future.
