I Like to Lie Outside and Watch the Stars

Best On A Dark Clear Night In The Hot Tub...

One of my favorite activities is to spend time in the hot tub outside on a clear dark night looking up at the stars. I turn off all the jets and other lights and just look up, identifying as many constellations as I can. It is my own womb-like quiet time, shielded from the cold while I look up think about the timelessness and vastness of space, and what part of it I fit into down here. And if I'm lucky I'll see a couple "shooters" as fleeting as pure thought, streak by before burning themselves out. I've also been know to time when the ISS comes by and be sure to watch it float silently overhead.

I so understand. I went with another couple to the Esalen tubs in Big Sur. It's a private resort but they open the hot tubs for the locals after midnight--no swimsuits allowed. You take your clothes off in a locker/shower area, and then walk into the tub area. It was winter, so we hurried to the nearest tub--fed by natural hot springs. It was very dark. You put your leg into the tub, and people already there move around like pool full of alligators. The only light is the stars up above. There is the sound of the surf below the cliff. Every now and then someone would stand up to cool off from the heat, but the air temperature was in the twenties so it wouldn't take long before they resubmerged. We got there at 1am and left at 3. Great night.

I always envied friends who had a yard and a hot tub.
