Saturn "setting" on the moon

This picture was taken in 2014, by an amateur astronomer using a telescope in his backyard in New Zealand. Some people are surprised at what can be seen through a modest "hobby" telescope.

I remember this phenomenon. The astronomy magazine to which I subscribed announced that Saturn and the moon would be "lined up" on a certain date, and I was in my backyard looking through my telescope. I saw this view myself. I did not attempt to take a picture, as astrophotography is something I have not dabbled in.

Back when we used film in cameras' I wasted 2 36-exposure rolls of film trying to get a decent shot of a wonderful full moon on an October night. Not one shot was decent, either over or under exposed.

Since then I quit messing with camera's and tripods, just go out and enjoy the sight with my own eyes.

@bowman81 That's why I never tried it! I suppose it is easier now with digital photography. But I agree, after a while we need to just step back and enjoy, without worrying about recording our experiences. And not just about astronomy!
That is amazing

@FairyGirlGemma Isn't it? When I was looking at it , my reaction was "I can't believe I am really seeing this!"

@bijouxbroussard I know. Saturn and the moon are each fascinating to observe through a telescope, but to see them together like this! Wow.
