I prefer that anyone who is toxic learn that dehumanising anyone else:
- makes you a smaller person
- eventually can do real damage to vulnerable people
I remember life confronting me with my attitudes I grew up with and didn't mean anything by. I'd open my big mouth and realise later what I had just done to someone in that room. And I hadn't really thought it through until then.

@Abstraction what is toxic at the moment ?
Abstraction61-69, M
@revenant It isn't toxic to criticise, disagree, have different views, to dislike things. I can have a civil conversation with people whose views are opposite to mine. I can listen and try to appreciate their perspective.
Toxic is being excessively insulting and abusive in interactions. Toxic is hate for anyone or hate speech, dehumanising other people rather than the kind of treatment we would want, for example, our own children to receive in their lives. I don't mind if my children have people who strongly disagree with them, just to clarify, we all need to learn to do that with grace.

@Abstraction I agree with you on all points. It seems we are living in seas, no oceans, of toxicity. Thing is it is contagious.

@revenant You're so right. Media and social media has polarised society now to extreme because it gets hits from the emotion of outrage - whether what is presented is true, an exaggeration or complete fiction. So it finds fuel in presenting the 'other' side as all extremists. When I dig, most of the worst stuff I read about left and right represents only extreme minority or is fictional. And I have found Russian sources for these on more than one occasion.
The problem then is that we are fed a constant diet of outrage. If we swallow enough of it, it will eventually find expression through us. That's what I see here. People spoiling for an argument. And as you say, that's contagious.
I eventually decided I didn't want to buy into this because it was colouring my quality of life and how I interacted with people.

@Abstraction 馃槉 You are way wiser than me. I do get dragged along at times lol
Abstraction61-69, M
@revenant Hey I was dragged along for a decade in EP and quite a while here. Occasionally get sucked in too.
