I Am Concerned About the Future of Earth

Imagine this;

You are a college professor. The first day you tell your class that if they have a nickel to place it in side a jar. (Yes every time they have one.) You instruct them to do this every single day for the entire school year. By the end of the year it's going to add up to at least 500 dollars.

The reason I ask you to imagine this is because it's the same idea that people have when it comes to littering, leaving lights on, running water unnecessarily, or any other negative thing.

Yeah for you it might just be one peice of trash. But someone down the street is doing the same thing. And another in a park. And another not too far. And so many more all over your town. This all adds up to about 100-500 pieces of trash in one city.
Yeah in your house it might have just been you that left your lights on in the bedroom while you cook down stairs. But I guarantee you are not the only person to do so. And this to adds up to wasted energy.
Yeah just now it's only you who ran water while brushing your teeth but you are not the only person. For there are others who are doing the same thing. That every little thing adds up.

Please understand this. Yes you are just one person. But believe me there's a bigger picture that cannot be ignored.

hi Londonbr1dge
Good for you.
Imagine if on the first day the students place one nickel in the jar but on the second two nickles and on the third for and so on. That imho is a far more realistic exponential description of damage done to Earth. At the end of the year its going to add up to at least as much plastic as is in The World's Oceans.

Best wishes
:)

ps if you place one grain of rice on the first square of the chess board, two grains on the second, four on the third and so on...you have 9,223,372,036,854,775,808 grains of rice on the whole board.

@sogdianrock thank you. I'll keep that in mind. 😊

hi Londonbr1dge
There are several tipping points being reached simultaneously - after which point damage made be irreversible. Seriously interesting times.

@sogdianrock chess board is 8x8 squares right? Can't remember
sogdianrock · 61-69, M
hi Londonbr1dge
Sure just 64 squares but that is the power of exponential growth.

ps yes sorry that total I said was for the whole board is just the last square.

@sogdianrock yeah no defiantly. Just wanted to make sure I knew how large a chess board was.

hi Londonbr1dge
haha a chess board is as large as infinity! You can play chess in your head! Seriously people play without a board and just imagine the board and incorporate moves into that shared image. I played chess competitively years ago. Great game!
Best wishes
