How does one calculate?

How does one calculate the number of illegal aliens in a nation if they're in hiding? And how does one calculate one's success rate at a border without knowing how many successfully got in? I don't buy Trump's claim of having achieved a 99.9 efficiency rate in stopping border crossings. Exageration is his signature style.

It is very difficult, to say the least. They might make an estimate from the numbers found, but it can never be so accurate that anyone can make sensible numerical claims to one decimal place!
Exaggerate?? I don't know the meaning of the word!!

You make it up because no one can easily prove you wrong and if they do you just call it fake news and discredit the source.

@Mudkip No one is against deporting criminals. However, for many of the people tRump deported and wants to deport, there's no evidence of criminality.

In a sworn declaration, ICE Acting Field Office Director of Enforcement and Removal Operations Robert Cerna argued that "the lack of specific information about each individual actually highlights the risk they pose" and "demonstrates that they are terrorists with regard to whom we lack a complete profile."
. . .
The admission that many of the men lacked criminal records – and were deported on the assumption that they might be terrorists – comes as top Trump administration officials insist that the men were violent criminals, with President Donald Trump labeling them "monsters."

So yeah, many have not even been charged with crimes in the US, nor linked with crimes in other countries. They were denied due process.

Due process is guaranteed in the 5th & 14th Amendments, and is not limited to people who look and talk like you and me.

By you stating "many" establishes the premise that you're referring to illegal aliens since that is the topic. Maybe you're not familiar with US law so I'll leave this for you to read.

8 U.S.C. § 1325 is a federal law that criminalizes improper entry by aliens into the United States. This includes entering at unauthorized times or places, eluding inspection, or making false representations or concealing material facts to gain entry. The law also addresses marriage and commercial enterprise fraud for the purpose of evading immigration laws.

Also, re-entering after deportation is generally considered a felony(which is the case for thousands) in case you didn't know.
@Mudkip Thanks for the tip! And please allow me to do you the favor of acquainting you with the law on ASYLUM.

§1158. Asylum
(a) Authority to apply for asylum
(1) In general Any alien who is physically present in the United States or who arrives in the United States (whether or not at a designated port of arrival and including an alien who is brought to the United States after having been interdicted in international or United States waters), irrespective of such alien's status, may apply for asylum in accordance with this section or, where applicable, section 1225(b) of this title.
For decades, US immigration law and policy was designed to spit in the eye of Fidel Castro by treating everyone who set foot on Florida as an asylum seeker. This helped earn votes from a swing demographic in a swing state. I agree, we need immigration reform. The solution is better laws, not new declarations of emergency.

You mention
you're referring to illegal aliens
I'm not saying any particular person or group is guilty or innocent. I'm saying you can't establish either guilt or innocence without due process. How do you know they're illegal? You don't, and without due process, neither does ICE.
He's ok with deporting children with cancer who are actual citizens too
