Well... yeah.
LSD got discovered (not invented) by a study on ergot, which is a mold that grows in grains. Next to having creating some serious health issues, ergot can also induce a moment of "madness" considering the LSD component. If the substance ended up in some bakers bread, and entire town could be effected. For more information, see "ergotism".
