In the 1930-40s the possibility of anyone going into Space, let alone landing on the Moon, was still so remote that although the ambition existed, all manner of ideas could flourish.
As a serious point, manned flight apart, Britain was involved in space exploration right from the start though, and still plays an important part in international scientific projects.
