Ever seen a sea vortex?
A sea vortex in Sicily refers to the legendary whirlpool of Charybdis in the Strait of Messina, or the severe tornadic waterspout that recently struck the coast near Palermo.
The Whirlpool of Charybdis
• Location:
Found in the Strait of Messina, a narrow channel separating eastern Sicily (near Punta del Faro) from mainland Calabria, Italy.
• Cause:
Strong tidal currents collide as they move between the Tyrrhenian and Ionian Seas, creating turbulent surface eddies and small whirlpools.
• Mythology:
In Greek mythology (such as Homer's Odyssey), Charybdis was a sea monster who swallowed huge amounts of water and spat it back out, creating a deadly vortex opposite the cliff-dwelling monster Scylla.
Severe Weather Waterspouts
• Recent Event:
In August 2024, a powerful tornadic waterspout formed off the coast of Porticello near Palermo in western Sicily, tragically sinking the superyacht Bayesian.
• Cause:
These rotating columns of air develop over warm Mediterranean waters during severe thunderstorms, generating sudden, localized high-speed winds and extreme surface turbulence.
