I used to work with MPs and this sounds facinating - will look into this

Problem is it's too small to use in large amounts of water. The amount of water that needs to be filtered would make it cost ineffective.
Yet it is a start that would likely take decades to be any help. It really needs to filter oceans. And that presents ultrasound sensitive life form problems.

@DeWayfarer yeah but you can see the person's hand which is not blown up. That stuff looks more like confetti than anything
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@HoeBag that is very likely the tips of fingers.
This is weird, because now that image isn't showing the filter.

@DeWayfarer Well we cannot even see the device in the pic, just the inventors standing there smiling.

Ultrasonics for cleaning small objects like jewellery in trays of water are not new. I assume this is a similar application..😷

The prize was awarded 18 months ago. The teens build on a phenomenon you can see by looking at leaves forming a cluster in the middle of a pool, or water channel.
Commercialization could take years and requires major infrastructure retrofits.

They won $50,000 prize for this actually and are trying to develop and improve it (google)

Hopefully it is true. Put one in every home.

People think micro plastics are dangerous lol... how about the fact that 99% of people die before they're 100 to some kind of disease? Micro plastics are a micro problem to what we're facing.

Not sure how that would work

It sounds too good to be true, but it appears to be factual.

ugly

Would be incredible if it is!
FoxyGoddess · 51-55, F
But what do they do with the microplastics they clean up?
FoxyGoddess · 51-55, F
@Teslin I wonder how feasible that would be, or how ecofriendly as recycling plastic creates its own set of pollution issues.
Teslin · M
@FoxyGoddess True. But at least you would not be injesting them.
1 step at a time.

@FoxyGoddess My understanding is that most plastics sent for recycling end up in landfills anyways because with all the different types of plastic and n4sty stuff in plastic bottles, it would just cost too much to separate the types, clean them up etc.
And like you said - the whole process would just create other types of pollution. Plus who would even pay for all that?
No problem is ever solved, just rearranged.
