The pistol shrimp
The pistol shrimp snaps its claw shut so rapidly that it creates a high-speed bubble bullet, shooting through the water at over 60 miles per hour. When this bubble collapses, it unleashes a shockwave powerful enough to knock out small fish and crustaceans. For a fraction of a second, the imploding bubble reaches temperatures nearly as hot as the surface of the sun, and the snap is loud, over 218 decibels, which is louder than a gunshot, according to Ocean Conservatory.
This incredible ability makes the pistol shrimp one of nature’s most unexpected predators, proving that in the underwater world, size isn’t everything.
