Why are people so offended by nudity and the human body?

Correction. HUMANS do not find nudity offensive…mostly just Americans and their censorship. We have become so conditioned to think that nudity is offensive bcuz the only time we are exposed to it is in Private and we are made to feel that it is dirty.

Breasts are not sexual until you sexualize them. - Jamie

I have always wondered about this. One explanation that has a lot to do with it is religion. It is largely religion that teaches us that the uncovered body is something shameful. I am amazed that people think that a god created our private parts and then decided they were "bad."

Europe has less of a problem with nudity than America. Although we have been showing breasts in America for decades, genitalia, until recently, were a no-no. They could flash across the screen for only a few seconds. More than that could get the movie an x-rating. It is becoming a bit more common though.

For Americans, it is violence that is unrestricted. Guns, explosions, bloody gore dripping from every corner of the room after a violent gang fight... Anything goes. We have no problem with it at all and movie ratings are rarely enforced.

It's largely a cultural thing. - Aaron.

Because they think they should be offended by nudity.

Nudity isn’t naturally offending, only it can be taught to be offending. If from a young age on people have been talking bad about nudity, you start believing so. That doesn’t make it true, but it does influence the way - Sanna.

Most European countries -- in fact, most countries in general -- have public nudity laws. I assume it's kind of an outgrowth of sex being stigmatized, which in turn has to do with the spread of disease & bastard babies in the days before effective family planning tech & protection. But yeah, it'd be cool to decriminalize public nudity since public nudity isn't inherently damaging. Maybe ban it on the bus since it's kinda impossible not to bump into people there & I don't wanna sit on someone else's ass residue, but just walkin' down the street? What's the problem, honestly?
