Definitely a form of control. Treating females as chattel rather than human beings. I can't comprehend the concept of women being inferior or less-than some how. How can a son view his mother this way or a brother view his sister like that. I guess if the culture is of arranged marriages all down through the lowest classes than the ingredient of love in any relationship is not important and absent by design.

Maybe I was not very clear in my post. A kind of far away acquaintance of mine from Morrocco put that in my mind : You the west laugh at practices of female and male genital mutilation in Africa which he does not approve of one bit by the way, but you in the West , oh arrogant ones, practice the same thing with the young now but in way more insidious ways.

Yes, insane double-standards and hypocrisy. Especially when male circumcision is reckoned to be such a good thing and labia reduction is becoming so popular. A culture that promotes this has no business lecturing other cultures on where they're going wrong. There's no logic to it.
